Understanding Line Numbers in Business Central

When working with documents in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central—such as sales orders, purchase invoices, or journals—you may have noticed that each line has a Line No. like 10000, 20000, 30000, and so on.

But why are these numbers spaced so far apart?

Default Line Number Increment: 10,000

By default, Business Central increments line numbers by 10,000. This is not just a random choice—it’s designed to give you flexibility.

Example:

Line

Line No.

Description

1

10000

Item A

2

20000

Item B

3

30000

Item C

This wide spacing allows you to insert lines in between existing ones without having to renumber all subsequent lines.

For example:

If you need to insert a line between Item A and Item B, you can use line number 15000.

🧠 Why It Matters

  • Keeps data organized and sortable
  • Makes customizations and data imports easier
  • Supports scenarios where you need to reorder or insert lines frequently

⚙️ Can You Change It?

Yes—developers can adjust the increment logic in AL code (e.g., changing it to 1000 or another value), but 10000 remains the standard unless there’s a good reason to modify it.

Conclusion:
Business Central’s line number system is simple but powerful. The default 10000 increment gives users and developers the room they need to manage document lines with flexibility and control.
