Simplifying Shipping: How to Set Up Item Weights in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

For businesses that rely on accurate shipping processes, setting up item weights correctly in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is crucial. This setup not only facilitates efficient logistics but also ensures that shipping costs and timelines are calculated accurately. Here’s a brief guide on how to manage item weights effectively within your ERP system.

Setting Up Basic Item Weights

1. Access the Item Card: Start by navigating to the item card. This is where you can input vital details about each product.

2. Fill Out Weight Fields: In the first tab labeled 'Inventory', you will find fields for 'Net Weight', 'Gross Weight', and 'Unit Volume'. These are essential metrics that affect how shipping costs are calculated and should be filled out accurately based on product specifications.

Advancing Setup with Item Units of Measure

1. Specify Values Per Unit of Measure: Dynamics 365 Business Central allows you to specify weights and volumes not just for the base unit but for other units of measure as well. For example, if you sell a product individually and in packs, you can set different weights and volumes for each unit type.

2. Manage Multiple Units of Measure: On the item card, under the item unit of measure section, you can enter different specifications for various units. This is particularly useful for products that are sold in multiple configurations, such as a single bicycle versus a set of bicycles.
